Our Pastoral Curriculum- Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education

At Colmers, we intend our pastoral curriculum, specifically our PSHE lessons, to equip our students with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions for the rest of their lives. Students will develop their Colmers Characteristics and leave school as well-adjusted young adults ready to take their place in the world as active citizens.
In PSHE:
- Personal education encourages our students to relate their learning to their own lives, to reflect on their own character and to set their own ambitions and aspirations.
- Social education opens our students’ minds to factors affecting wider society, their relationships with families, friends and work colleagues, as well as encouraging them to reflect on what they can contribute to society and what kind of person they want to be.
- Health education teaches our students how to stay healthy and safe, physically and mentally and how to seek help and support from others if they need to.
- Economic education opens our students’ minds to the vast array of career opportunities that exist for them, personal financial management and how the wider economy and political system operate in Britain today.
At Colmers, PSHE is a vital part of our pastoral curriculum and is therefore taught in weekly one lessons by form tutors, alongside daily tutor time and weekly assemblies. This pastoral curriculum, along with all the Colmers’ Curriculum ensures that students know more, do more and can be more.

We aim to equip students with the knowledge to make informed decisions, to know who they are and how to be reflective and develop. Through our careers programme, students will know the careers that are available to them and the different paths available to obtain those careers. The PSHE Curriculum will ensure that students know the Fundamental British Values and how to belong to wider society. PSHE ensures that students know where and when to seek advice and help in school and beyond.
Do more:
In PSHE, students will identify their personal qualities, skills and achievements and be encouraged to plan how they can develop and live fulfilling lives. They will apply the academic skills of critical thinking and evaluation to help them navigate through a vast number of topics with differing opinions and ideas presented to them. They will develop effective speaking and listening skills so that they have strategies to manage issues they may encounter in their lives and be able to ask for support should they need it.

Students will be aspirational, responsible citizens who are confident, resilient and open minded. We promote students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development as well as reinforce our school commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. We provide expert independent, up-to-date careers guidance that gives our students the best information and opportunities available and helps them progress into further education, training and employment.
Our students will be encouraged to embody the Colmers Characteristics and take their place in the world as happy, healthy individuals who have successful relationships with their family, friends and neighbours.
Tutor Time at Colmers
Tutor Time is split into different activities dependent on the day and the year group. See table below for details. Each day tutors will support students to ensure the best possible start to their day to help them to be successful.
