    Drama Curriculum Intent

At Colmers, we want our students in Drama to be creative, curious story-tellers who understand they have the power of ethical agency within their own context and the wider world.

Drama at Colmers is designed to enable students to be more by offering them a safe and positive platform to explore who they are and celebrate their individuality and creativity.

We are passionate to play our part and develop the Colmers Character by exploring multiple facets about different cultures, societies and histories, making connections between those different to their own, to see their place in the world and widen their perspective. Through this creative exploration students leave us having learned to lead open, inclusive and compassionate lives whilst simultaneously developing key skills for wider education such as oracy, rhetoric and the ability to analyse and evaluate what they see or hear.

We spend Year 7, 8 & 9 developing what students know. The structure of the curriculum is based on a spiral progression of learning. Through the recursive nature of the subject, students will re-visit the skills and techniques via different genres, texts and styles of performance, constantly building upon and developing their knowledge of creating, performing and responding. They will regularly explore how to creatively use; voice, physicality and the important disciplines of stagecraft. The practice of critical self and peer reflection is embedded through the learning experience.

This approach will allow them to be confident and independent thinkers at KS4, ensuring they are able to take on the challenging opportunities of:

Ø  demonstrating their understanding of different approaches to performance through the study of a set text

Ø  creating original work and reflecting on the devising process

Ø  critically analysing professional and non-professional repertoire

Ø  interpreting a range of plays ready for public performance

The study of Drama involves our students experiencing and discussing emotions, creativity, teamwork and empathy. Students will leave us having developed their resilience, engagement, confidence and sense of good citizenship.
